What plant family does sotol belong to?

Sotol is made from the Sotol or Dasylirion plant. It grows naturally in the desert regions of northern Mexico and is not an agave. It is a different plant with a longer maturation process and a strong connection to its environment.

Sotol belongs to the Asparagaceae plant family. Within this family, sotol or dasylirion is part of the Nolinoideae subfamily, which is different from agave, even though they share similar desert adaptations.
